Neapolitan Ice Cream

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the cream

  1. Freeze 1 gallon of cream until hard, then divide it into three equal parts.

  2. Color one part with chocolate, another with rose or strawberry, and flavor the last with vanilla.

Layer and freeze

  1. Layer the colors in brick-shaped molds: first red, then white, and finally chocolate.

  2. Close the molds tightly and pack them in ice and salt.

  3. Allow to freeze for 3 to 4 hours.

Unmold and serve

  1. Dip the molds in hot water, remove the lids, and turn out onto a cold board.

  2. Cut into slices across the layers and serve.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cream
Freezes into the rich, smooth body of the ice cream.
Chocolate
Colors one layer and adds cocoa flavor.
Rose or strawberry flavoring
Colors and flavors the red layer.
Vanilla
Flavors the white layer.

The step that matters

Dip the molds in hot water. A brief dip warms only the outer surface of the mold, loosening the ice cream so it releases whole. Too long a dip melts the outer layers and blurs the stripes.
