Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Shad
The main fish, which is the dish's central protein and flavour.
Bread crumbs
Absorb liquid from the egg and butter, giving the stuffing body and a moist texture.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, keeping the stuffing and fish moist as they bake.
Egg
Binds the stuffing so it holds together inside the fish.
Potatoes
Layered on top, they add starch and soften in the oven while the fish cooks.

The step that matters

Bake until well done under buttered paper. Fish cooks quickly and dries out when overbaked, while underbaking leaves it unsafe. The buttered paper traps steam so the fish cooks gently and stays moist, so checking doneness carefully matters.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (bread, butter, pepper, egg):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Asparagusfits better
  3. Chivefits about as well
  4. Potatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against bread, butter, pepper, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
