Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the lettuce

  1. Wash the lettuce leaves thoroughly and soak in cold water for 30 minutes to make them crisp.

  2. Shake off excess water and dry each leaf with cheese cloth, being careful not to bruise them.

Assemble and serve

  1. Rub the inside of a salad bowl with a piece of onion.

  2. Arrange the lettuce leaves in a nest in the bowl.

  3. Just before serving, pour French dressing over the salad.

  4. Garnish with chopped green peppers or pepper rings.

What each ingredient does

Lettuce leaves
Form the base of the salad, providing a crisp, fresh texture and a bowl for the dressing.
French dressing
Adds moisture, acidity and flavor to the leaves just before serving.

The step that matters

Dry each leaf well. Water left on the leaves dilutes the dressing and makes it pool at the bottom of the bowl. Gently patting the leaves dry keeps them crisp and lets the dressing cling.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (lettuce, pepper):

  1. Spinachfits better
  2. Beetrootfits better
  3. Mustardfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against lettuce, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
