What each ingredient does

Gelatine
Provides the gel structure that sets the dessert once chilled.
Strawberries
Supply the main flavour and fruit pulp that gives the dessert its colour.
Sugar
Adds sweetness to balance the tartness of the strawberries.
Whipped cream
Adds fat and lightness, giving a softer, creamier texture to the set dessert.

The step that matters

Cool the gelatine mixture before folding in the whipped cream. If the gelatine mixture is still too hot, it will melt the whipped cream and deflate its air, leaving a dense, less light texture. Cooling it slightly keeps the cream stable while the gelatine still sets properly.
