Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Smoked beef
Provides the main savory flavor and the meat that gives the dish its texture.
Milk
Forms the creamy liquid that thickens into a smooth sauce around the beef.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that carries flavor and smooths the sauce.
Flour
Thickens the milk as it heats, giving the sauce body.

The step that matters

Stirring while the sauce boils. Flour mixed into hot liquid can clump if not stirred constantly. Stirring keeps the paste dispersed so the sauce thickens smoothly.
