Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sheep's melt
Provides the meat and flavour that the gravy is built on.
Butter
Fat for frying the slices, helping them brown and adding richness.
Flour (in the method)
Light coating on the slices that helps them brown and thickens the liquid.

The step that matters

Browning the slices. Frying or shaking the floured slices until they colour builds the deep, roasted flavour of the gravy. Pale slices give a weaker, blander base, so colour them fully before adding water.

Swap the onion

The recipe marks onion as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper, lemon, thyme, parsley, celery, carrot):

  1. Parsnipfits better
  2. Leekfits better
  3. Turnipfits better
