Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Young cucumbers
Provide the main body of the dish, softening into tender pieces during stewing.
Flour
Coats the cucumber pieces and helps thicken the gravy as it stews.
Butter
Adds richness and light browning when the cucumbers are fried.
Brown gravy
Supplies the liquid and savoury flavour that the cucumbers absorb while stewing.

The step that matters

Frying lightly before stewing. Brief frying in butter helps the cucumber surfaces brown and hold their shape, so they do not turn mushy in the gravy.
