Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Carrots
Form the main body of the dish, becoming tender and sweet as they cook.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky moisture when melted over the hot carrots.

The step that matters

Boiling time by carrot size. Young and full-grown carrots differ greatly in density, so boiling them for the wrong length leaves young ones mushy or mature ones firm at the core. Matching the time to the carrot size gives an even, tender texture.

Swap the carrot

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, cream):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Leekfits better
  3. Sweet potatofits better
  4. Carrotthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
