Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Carrots
Main vegetable; cooking softens their fibrous structure until tender.
Fresh butter
Adds richness and fat, carrying flavor when melted over the cooked carrots.

The step that matters

Boil until fully tender. Carrot texture depends on cooking time, which varies with the carrot's maturity. Older carrots need much longer, and undercooking leaves them tough because the cell walls have not softened enough.

Swap the carrot

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, cream):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Leekfits better
  3. Sweet potatofits better
  4. Carrotthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
