Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rice
Forms a starchy coating that encloses each orange and holds its shape during boiling.
Oranges
Provide the fruit filling and their juice and aroma flavour the dish as it cooks.
Sifted sugar
Adds sweetness and a fine sugary coating on the finished snowballs.

The step that matters

Boiling the wrapped oranges. The rice must stay tightly packed around each orange so the parcel holds together. Keeping the water boiling steadily cooks the rice through and sets its starch, so the shape survives when turned out.

Swap the orange

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rice, sugar):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Coconutfits better
  3. Raisinfits better
  4. Orangethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against rice, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
