Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Venison
Provides the main meat flavour and body as it simmers into the broth.
Butter
Rolled in flour, it enriches the soup and thickens it slightly for a smoother texture.
Port or madeira wine
Adds acidity and aromatic depth that rounds out the rich meat broth.
Celery
Releases aromatic flavour and subtle savoury depth into the simmering soup.

The step that matters

Adding the butter and flour mixture. Flour-coated butter must be incorporated into a gently boiling liquid so it disperses evenly. Dropped in clumps or added to a violently boiling pot, it can separate or form lumps instead of thickening smoothly.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (venison, ham, onion, pepper, meat, celery, butter):

  1. Thymefits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Garlicfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against venison, ham, onion, pepper, meat, celery, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
