What each ingredient does

Stale bread crumbs
Form the bulk of the stuffing and absorb the milk and butter.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, giving the stuffing a softer, more flavourful texture.
Milk
Moistens the bread so the crumbs soften without becoming soggy.
Egg
Binds the stuffing so it holds together when cooked.
Flour
Thickens the pan liquid into a smooth gravy.
