Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the potatoes

  1. Cut cold boiled potatoes into ½-inch dice to make 4 cups.

  2. Marinate potato dice by tossing lightly in French dressing.

  3. Drain and arrange in a mound in the center of a rosette of lettuce leaves.

Build the salad

  1. Mark the mound into fourths and press the divisions apart into wedge shapes.

  2. Fill two opposite wedges with marinated finely chopped beet.

  3. Fill the other two wedges with yolks of hard-boiled eggs rubbed through a wire strainer.

  4. Mark the divisions of the wedges with a fine line of minced parsley.

  5. Cut the whites of the hard-boiled eggs into narrow strips and pile around the base of the mound on the lettuce leaves.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Form the bulk of the salad and absorb the French dressing for flavor.
Beet
Adds color and an earthy sweetness to its wedge.
Egg yolks
Add richness and a creamy texture when rubbed smooth.
Egg whites
Provide a firm, mild contrast in texture as garnish strips.
Mayonnaise
Adds fat and creaminess for those who want extra richness on the side.

The step that matters

Marinate the potato dice lightly. Tossing gently keeps the cubes intact while the dressing soaks in. Overmixing breaks the potatoes into mush, and draining well before arranging stops the mound from becoming watery.

Swap the lettuce

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, egg, parsley):
