Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef stock
Forms the liquid base that carries the soup's body and savory flavor.
Fresh tomatoes
Provide the main flavor, acidity, and bulk of the puree.
Butter
Enriches the soup with fat and smooth mouthfeel when cooked into the paste.
Flour
Thickens the soup as it cooks with the butter into a paste.

The step that matters

Adding the flour and butter paste. Stirring the paste gradually into the boiling stock helps it disperse evenly. Dropping it in all at once lets flour clump, leaving lumps that are hard to remove once thickened.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, butter, flour, pepper):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Chivefits better
  3. Leekfits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, butter, flour, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
