Old-fashioned Boiled Dinner

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Place the corned beef in a large kettle of cold water.

  2. At 10 o'clock, add the salt pork and wash the beets before adding them to the kettle.

  3. If the beets are large, add them an hour earlier.

  4. Wash the carrots thoroughly; add large carrots now, and small ones with the potatoes later.

  5. At 11 o'clock, add peeled turnips cut into 3 or 4 pieces and parsnips.

  6. Cut the cabbage into 4 parts lengthwise and add it along with peeled potatoes.

  7. Boil all ingredients for about 30 minutes.

  8. Once cooked, place the beets in cold water to remove the skin, then cut them into 3 or 4 pieces.

  9. Serve the cabbage in a vegetable dish after draining well.

  10. Serve the meat and vegetables in separate dishes for convenience.

  11. Add a piece of red pepper to enhance the flavor.

  12. Serve grated horseradish or any bottled sauce on the side.
