Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Meadow mushroom buttons
Form the main body of the dish, softening and releasing their moisture as they stew.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, and browns slightly to give a nutty flavour before the mushrooms go in.

The step that matters

Shaking the pan while the mushrooms simmer. Mushrooms hold little fat and can stick and scorch on the hot pan. Shaking keeps them moving so they cook evenly without burning, while the moisture they release lets them stew until tender.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (mushroom, butter, pepper):

  1. Thymefits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Marjoramfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against mushroom, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
