Baked Tomatoes

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Cut off the stalk end of the tomatoes and scoop out the pulp with a spoon.

  3. Mix the pulp with bread crumbs, salt, pepper, butter, and sugar if desired.

Bake

  1. Stuff the mixture back into the tomato skins.

  2. Place the stuffed tomatoes in a shallow tin pan and bake for about 20 minutes.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Smooth tomatoes
Hollowed shells that hold the stuffing and soften as they bake.
Bread crumbs
Absorb the tomato pulp and butter, giving the stuffing body so it holds its shape.
Butter
Adds fat and richness to the stuffing and helps it brown lightly in the oven.

The step that matters

Scooping out the pulp. Cutting through the tomato skin carefully keeps the shells intact. A torn or thin shell cannot hold the stuffing and may collapse during baking.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (bread, pepper, butter, sugar):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits about as well
  3. Sweet potatofits about as well
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against bread, pepper, butter, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
