Short Cake

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. Sift the baking powder with the flour.

  2. Mix in the butter, sugar, and salt.

  3. Add enough milk or water to form a soft dough.

  4. Roll out the dough as thin as a pie crust.

  5. Place one layer in a greased 7x14 inch baking pan and spread with melted butter.

  6. Sprinkle a little flour on top, then add another layer of dough and repeat.

  7. Continue until all the dough is used, making four layers.

  8. Bake in a 400°F (200°C) oven for about 15 minutes.

  9. Turn the cake upside down, remove the top layer, and place it on a dish.

  10. Spread generously with butter and sweetened fresh strawberries.

  11. Repeat for each layer and serve hot with cream.
