Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Whole chicken
Provides the main meat, cooked gently in its own moisture and stock until tender.
Flour
Dusted on the chicken to help form a browned crust and thicken the juices.
Brown roux
Thickens the gravy, giving it body and a nutty, toasted flavor.
Butter
Adds fat for basting, promoting richness and golden browning on the skin.
Boiling water or stock
Supplies liquid that gently steams the chicken and forms the base of the gravy.

The step that matters

Cook gently for the stated time. Gentle, covered cooking keeps the chicken moist and tender; cooking too hard or too long can dry out the meat and toughen the proteins.
