What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main protein and flavour as it browns and releases juices into the broth.
Raw rice
Absorbs the stock as it cooks, becoming soft and giving the dish its body.
Tomato liquid
Adds acidity and savoury depth to the broth.
Chicken stock
Forms the cooking liquid that the rice absorbs, carrying the flavour of the dish.
Parmesan cheese
Adds salty, savoury richness that blends into the broth as it is stirred in.
French mushrooms
Contribute earthy flavour and a tender texture after brief cooking in the broth.

The step that matters

Cook the rice until soft. Rice absorbs liquid and keeps softening after it leaves the heat, so checking that it is tender before stopping prevents it from being firm or overcooked and dry.
