Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cabbage
Forms the bulk of the dish and, once chopped and cooked, gives it its soft, moist body.
Raw egg
Binds the chopped cabbage so it holds together and sets when baked.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that carries flavor and helps the top brown.
Bread crumbs
Form a crisp, golden topping that browns in the oven.
Beef pot liquor
Adds moisture and savory meaty flavor to the cabbage mixture and crumbs.

The step that matters

Brown the top. The egg sets the mixture as it bakes, while the crumbs brown from dry heat. Removing the cover at the end lets the surface brown instead of steaming, so the top should be watched closely.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, butter, egg, beef, bread):
