Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Grated cocoa
Provides the chocolate flavor and color of the drink.
Hot milk
Adds creaminess and body, softening the bitterness of the cocoa.

The step that matters

Mixing the cocoa into a smooth paste first. Cocoa powder clumps when dry and dispersed directly into liquid. Mixing it with a little cold water first wets each particle, so it blends evenly into the boiling water without lumps.

Swap the cocoa

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, cream):

  1. Cocoathe original
  2. Almondfits about as well
  3. Pistachiofits about as well
  4. Peanutfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against milk, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
