Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Ground beef
Forms the body of the loaf and provides the meaty flavor and structure when cooked.
Soda crackers
Absorb liquid and bind the meat so the loaf stays tender rather than dense.
Sweet milk
Adds moisture and softness, keeping the loaf from drying out during slow baking.
Egg
Binds the mixture together so the loaf holds its shape when sliced.
Bacon
Renders fat over the top of the loaf, adding savory flavor and moisture as it bakes.

The step that matters

Mixing in the hot water and crackers. Crackers must absorb the liquid before shaping. Adding them to cold meat or skipping the moistening can leave the loaf dry, dense, or crumbly, since starch absorbs water and helps hold the meat's juices.

Swap the sage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, milk, egg, pepper, butter):

  1. Nutmegfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Cinnamonfits better
  4. Sagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, milk, egg, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
