Cocoa Frosting

Ingredients

Directions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine cocoa and cold water; stir until smooth.

  2. Add hot water and cook for 1-2 minutes.

  3. Stir in vanilla and a pinch of salt.

  4. Gradually add confectioners' sugar until the mixture is thick enough to spread.

  5. Beat until smooth and glossy, free from lumps.

  6. If too thick, add a little cold water; if too thin, add more sugar.

  7. For frosting the sides of the cake, make it slightly stiffer.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cocoa
Provides the chocolate flavour and dark colour of the frosting.
Confectioners' sugar
Sweetens the frosting and thickens it as it is added to the liquid.
Hot water
Helps the cocoa dissolve and cook into a smooth, spreadable base.

The step that matters

Beat until smooth and glossy, free from lumps. Cocoa and sugar clump easily if not fully dispersed in the liquid. Cooking the cocoa mixture and beating it well dissolves the particles, giving a smooth texture and glossy finish.

Swap the cocoa

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (vanilla, sugar):

  1. Chestnutfits better
  2. Almondfits better
  3. Hazelnutfits better
  4. Cocoathe original

Fit is the average pairing score against vanilla, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
