Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 300°F (150°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the beef

  1. Cut the salt beef into large, thin slices.

  2. Dip each slice into vinegar from mixed pickles.

Warm and serve

  1. Place the beef on a flat dish and pour ½ cup of water over it.

  2. Warm in the oven at 300°F (150°C) until heated through.

  3. Alternatively, roll the beef in flour after dipping in vinegar and add 1 cup of water before warming.

  4. For a sautéed version, cook the slices in a little butter in a frying pan.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Salt beef
Provides the main meat, cut into thin slices that heat through quickly.
Vinegar from mixed pickles
Adds acidity and tang that flavours the surface of the beef.
Flour
Coats the slices in the alternative method, helping them hold moisture and brown lightly.
Butter
Adds fat for the sautéed version, giving richness and browning in the pan.
