Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bermuda arrowroot
Thickens the water into a smooth, translucent gruel as it cooks.
Cream
Adds richness and a softer, milder body to the gruel.

The step that matters

Make the paste before adding the water. Arrowroot clumps if dropped into hot liquid dry. Wetting it with cold water first lets the starch disperse evenly, so it thickens smoothly when added to the boiling water.

Swap the lemon

The recipe marks lemon as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (arrowroot, cream, sugar, brandy):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Raisinfits better
  3. Strawberryfits better
  4. Lemonthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against arrowroot, cream, sugar, brandy. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
