Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Form the main body and acidic, savory base of the soup.
Okra
Releases natural thickening starch as it cooks, giving the soup body.
Egg yolks
Emulsify and thicken the mixture, adding richness to the broth.
Chicken
Provides the main protein and savory flavor carried in the ham gravy.

The step that matters

Adding the egg yolk mixture. Egg yolks thicken when heated but can scramble if the mixture is too hot or added directly to boiling liquid. Pouring it over the chicken, as the record directs, and combining gently helps keep the yolks smooth.
