What each ingredient does

Remains of boiled vegetables
Form the bulk of the hash and provide its main texture and flavour.
Butter
Adds richness and helps coat the pan and vegetables, encouraging light browning.
Hot water
Adds moisture so the vegetables steam and heat through without drying or sticking.

The step that matters

Covering the pan to trap steam. Trapped steam heats the vegetables thoroughly from the inside. Uncovering afterward and stirring lets surplus moisture evaporate so the hash cooks well rather than staying soggy.

Swap the parsnip

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cabbage, potato, pepper, butter):

  1. Chivefits better
  2. Leekfits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Parsnipthe original
