Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Form the bulk of the dish and soften as they bake in the sauce.
Cream sauce
Provides moisture and richness that keeps the layers creamy as they bake.
Bread crumbs
Form a crisp, golden topping through browning in the oven.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the bread crumb topping brown.

The step that matters

Layering the potatoes and sauce. Slices must be thin and evenly covered with sauce so they cook through and stay moist. Thick or dry layers can stay firm or dry out in the oven.
