Ingredients

Directions

Prepare

  1. Boil 3 pints of water in a saucepan.

  2. Wash the cabbage in cold water and trim off the outer leaves.

  3. Cut the cabbage into pieces, similar to how you would for a salad.

Cook the soup

  1. Once the water is boiling, add the cabbage.

  2. Add the butter, pepper, and salt, and let it boil for 1 hour.

  3. After an hour, pour in the milk and bring it to a boil.

Serve

  1. Toast the slice of bread on both sides until slightly browned.

  2. Cut the toasted bread into dice‑sized pieces and place them in a soup tureen.

  3. Pour the cabbage soup over the bread and serve.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cabbage
Forms the body of the soup and softens into tender pieces during long boiling.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, giving the soup a smoother, rounder mouthfeel.
Milk
Adds creaminess and mild sweetness, softening the soup's flavour.
Bread
Soaks up the broth and gives the soup body and a toasted contrast.

The step that matters

Boiling the milk. Once milk is added it can scorch or curdle if it boils too hard for too long, so keep the heat controlled and watch it closely when bringing it to a boil.
