What each ingredient does

Turnips
Form the edible shell that holds the stuffing while it cooks.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the filling and crumbs brown in the oven.
Bread crumbs
Soak up moisture and add body to the filling, and crisp on top when baked.
Bacon
Adds savory, salty flavor and fat to the filling.
Milk
Moistens the filling so it holds together and stays tender.
