Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Provide the main body and rich flavour of the salad, binding the potato pieces together.
Potatoes
Form the bulk of the salad, giving a soft, tender texture when diced while hot.
French dressing
Adds moisture and tangy, oily flavour that coats the eggs and potatoes.

The step that matters

Dicing the potatoes while hot. Warm potatoes absorb dressing more readily than cold ones, so they take on flavour evenly. Cutting them cold makes them crumble and gives a drier salad.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, watercress, vinegar):

  1. Horseradishfits better
  2. Shallotfits better
  3. Mustardfits better
  4. Potatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, watercress, vinegar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
