Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Mix the cornstarch, baking powder, and cream of tartar in a bowl.

  3. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar together.

  4. Add the vanilla extract, then alternate adding the flour mixture and milk.

  5. Finally, fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites.

  6. If preferred, use 2 cups of flour and omit the cornstarch.

  7. Pour the batter into two shallow pans and bake until done.

  8. Once baked, frost the cake as desired.
