Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Provides rich meaty flavor as it simmers slowly in the broth.
Potatoes
Mashed potatoes thicken the soup and add body.
Rice
Adds starch that helps give the soup body as it cooks.
Bacon
Its fat and smoky savoriness season the broth from the start.

The step that matters

Skim the surface. Skimming removes foam and fat that rise during simmering, keeping the broth clear and less greasy.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, onion, potato, rice, carrot, turnip, pepper):

  1. Leekfits better
  2. Parsnipfits better
  3. Okrafits better
  4. Cabbagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, onion, potato, rice, carrot, turnip, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
