Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Winter squash
Forms the bulk of the dish and provides its soft, naturally sweet flesh.
Butter
Adds fat for richer flavour and a smoother, moister texture.
Sugar
Adds sweetness that balances the squash's earthy flavour.

The step that matters

Cook the squash until fully soft. Undercooked squash stays firm and fibrous, so it will not scrape out easily or mash smoothly. Cooking until tender breaks down the starches and cell walls, giving a smooth, even texture.

Swap the winter squash

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, pepper):

  1. Lemonfits better
  2. Mangofits better
  3. Figfits better
  4. Winter squashthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
