What each ingredient does

Carrots
Provide the main body, sweetness and flavour of the puree.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, and gives a silky finish when stirred in at the end.
Onions
Build savoury depth and aroma as they soften in the pan.
Celery
Adds aromatic background flavour to the soup base.
Broth
Supplies the liquid that cooks the vegetables and forms the soup's body.

The step that matters

Simmer until moisture is reduced, without browning. Cooking the vegetables gently with a lid drives off water and softens them without scorching. Browning would add bitter, burnt flavours that do not suit a clean carrot puree.
