Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Adds richness and, once lightly browned, a nutty aroma and flavor.
Spinach
Provides the main body and green vegetable flavor of the dish.
Cream
Adds moisture and a smooth, thick, rich texture when stirred in gradually.

The step that matters

Gradually add the cream while stirring. Adding cream slowly while stirring lets it blend evenly into the spinach. Pouring it in all at once can leave the sauce uneven or thin, so the texture stays smooth and cohesive.

Swap the spinach

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, cream, pepper, nutmeg, egg):

  1. Spinachthe original
  2. Potatofits about as well
  3. Leekfits less well
  4. Capsicumfits less well
