What each ingredient does

Pumpkin
Forms the main body of the dish, becoming soft and smooth when boiled and pressed.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a smoother, silkier mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Boil until tender. Pumpkin must be fully softened before pressing; undercooked pieces stay fibrous and make the mash grainy and lumpy when pushed through a colander.

Swap the pumpkin

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Lemonfits better
  2. Mangofits better
  3. Limefits better
  4. Pumpkinthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
