What each ingredient does

Rice
Thickens the soup as it cooks down, giving it a creamy body.
Egg yolks
Enrich and thicken the finish, adding richness and smoothness when heated gently.
Butter
Adds fat for a rich mouthfeel and smooth texture.
Cream
Adds fat and richness, softening the flavor and smoothing the texture.
Chicken broth
Provides the main savory liquid base and flavor for the soup.

The step that matters

Slowly add the soup while whisking briskly, avoiding boiling. Egg yolks thicken when heated, but if the mixture gets too hot they scramble and curdle. Adding the hot soup slowly while whisking spreads the heat evenly and keeps the liquid smooth.
