Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Stale bread
Forms the body of the dressing, absorbing liquid and butter while soft.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, keeping the bread tender and flavorful.
Oysters
Add a briny, savory flavor to the dressing.

The step that matters

Stuffing without packing too firmly. Dense packing slows heat from reaching the center and can leave the dressing undercooked, while loose stuffing cooks more evenly. Dressing also expands slightly as it heats, so pressing it tight can make it dense and gummy.

Swap the celery

The recipe marks celery as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (bread, butter, pepper, oyster):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Sagefits about as well
  3. Thymefits about as well
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against bread, butter, pepper, oyster. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
