Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Grease a pudding dish.

Layer and bake

  1. Layer ½ inch thick of grated bread in the dish, add bits of butter on top, then add a layer of chopped apples.

  2. Sprinkle with sugar and spices.

  3. Repeat layers until the dish is full, finishing with a layer of apples.

  4. Pour 1 cup of cold water over the top.

  5. Bake for 30 minutes.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sour apples
Provide the main bulk and tart flavour that balances the sugar.
Grated bread
Forms the soft layers that soak up moisture and give the pudding body.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that carries flavour and helps the top brown.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the apples caramelise slightly as they bake.
