Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bread
Provides the crisp, sturdy structure that holds the layers together.
Mayonnaise
Adds fat and moisture, binding the layers and keeping the sandwich from drying out.
Chicken or turkey
Supplies the main protein layer, mild in flavor and tender when thinly sliced.
Ham or bacon
Adds savory, salty flavor and fat from the hot, broiled slice.
Lettuce leaves
Adds cool, crisp texture and moisture between the fillings.

The step that matters

Press down firmly to compact the sandwich.. Pressing compacts the layers so they stay together when cut. Pressing too hard can squeeze out the mayonnaise and crush the lettuce, so press just enough to hold the stack.

Swap the lettuce

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (bread, chicken, pepper, ham):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Tomatofits better
  3. Mustardfits better
  4. Lettucethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against bread, chicken, pepper, ham. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
