Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tender turkey
Provides the main meat that is cooked through by roasting.
Stale bread
Soaks up moisture and gives the stuffing body and structure.
Eggs
Bind the stuffing so it holds together while cooking.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and helps the stuffing brown.
Dried sage
Adds aromatic, savory flavor to the stuffing.

The step that matters

Pour boiling water over the mixture to moisten it, but do not soak. Stale bread absorbs liquid quickly. Too little water leaves the stuffing dry, while too much makes it soggy and dense, so it should be moistened only until it holds together.

Swap the sage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (turkey, pepper, bread, egg, butter, flour):

  1. Nutmegfits about as well
  2. Parsleyfits about as well
  3. Sagethe original
  4. Thymefits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against turkey, pepper, bread, egg, butter, flour. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
