Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter crackers or soda biscuits
Swell and thicken the broth, giving the soup body.
Oysters
Provide the main briny, savoury flavor of the soup.
Milk
Forms the creamy base and adds richness and sweetness.
Sweet butter
Adds fat for richness and a smooth, rounded mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Boil until the oysters flavor the soup and the crackers swell. Boiling too hard or too long can toughen and shrink oysters and may cause the milk to scorch or separate. Gentle heat lets the crackers hydrate and thicken while the oyster flavor spreads into the liquid.
