Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the mixture and help it set into a firm, sliceable custard when baked.
Cream
Adds moisture and richness, keeping the custard tender rather than dry.
Butter
Adds fat for flavour and helps the buttered crumbs brown on top.

The step that matters

Drain the cabbage thoroughly. Excess water left in the cabbage dilutes the egg and cream mixture, so it may not set properly and can turn the topping soggy.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, butter, cream, pepper):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Spinachfits better
  3. Asparagusfits better
  4. Cabbagethe original
