Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Oysters
Provide the main flavour and tender, briny body of the soup.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, rounding out the broth's flavour.
Cream or milk
Adds richness and softens the broth's texture when added.
Crackers
Soak up the hot broth, adding body and a toasty, starchy texture.

The step that matters

Let the mixture come to a boil. Oysters cook quickly, and overcooking makes them tough and shrunken. Watch them closely once the broth reaches a boil so they stay tender.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (oyster, butter, pepper, cream, vinegar):

  1. Cucumberfits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Potatofits better
  4. Cabbagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against oyster, butter, pepper, cream, vinegar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
