Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Pineapple
Provides the main fruit flavor and, with sugar, the body of the cooked base.
Sugar
Sweetens the base and helps thicken the cooked pineapple into a syrupy mixture.
Gelatin
Sets the mixture so it holds its shape when chilled.
Cream
Adds richness and a light, airy texture when whipped.
Egg whites
Whipped into foam to lighten the mixture and add volume.

The step that matters

Fold the whipped cream into the beaten egg whites. Folding gently keeps the air trapped in the whipped cream and egg whites; stirring vigorously deflates the foam and leaves the dessert dense and less light.

Swap the pineapple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, gelatin, cream, egg):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Strawberryfits better
  3. Raisinfits about as well
  4. Pineapplethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, gelatin, cream, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
