Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Lean beef
Releases flavour and body into the broth as it stews gently.
Lean ham
Adds savoury depth to the broth when fried and then simmered.
Onions
Build sweetness and aroma when fried until light brown.
Grouse or partridges
Contribute rich game flavour to the broth during the long stew.

The step that matters

Stewing gently after adding the water. Heating slowly and simmering gently keeps the broth clear and extracts flavour without boiling the meat toughly. A hard boil can make the broth cloudy and greasy.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rabbit, ham, onion, beef, bread, butter, pepper):

  1. Garlicfits about as well
