Crab Salad

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the crabs

  1. Boil the crabs for 25 minutes, then drain and let them cool.

  2. Remove the upper shell and tail, then break apart the crabs and pick out the meat carefully. Don't forget to include the meat from the large claws and the creamy fat from the upper shell.

Assemble and garnish

  1. Line a salad bowl with the lettuce leaves, add the crab meat, and pour over the mayonnaise.

  2. Garnish with crab claws, sliced hard-boiled eggs, and little mounds of cress leaves.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Hard-shell crabs
Provide the main body of meat that forms the salad.
Mayonnaise
Adds moisture, richness and fat that binds the crab meat together.
Small white lettuce
Forms a crisp leafy base that holds the crab meat.

The step that matters

Picking out the meat. Shell fragments are hard to see once the meat is mixed with mayonnaise, and they are unpleasant to bite into. Careful picking removes them while keeping the larger, sweeter pieces intact.

Swap the lettuce

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (crab, egg):

  1. Asparagusfits better
  2. Chivefits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Lettucethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against crab, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
