Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Neck of mutton
Provides the main meat, and its collagen softens into rich body during long simmering.
Onions
Break down during simmering, adding sweetness and body to the broth.
Mealy potatoes
Break down slightly as they cook, thickening the stew and adding starchy body.

The step that matters

Adding enough cold water to just reach the mutton. Using too much water dilutes the broth and weakens its flavor, while starting with cold water lets the meat warm gradually for a clearer, more tender result.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (mutton, pepper, potato):

  1. Carrotfits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Tomatofits about as well
